The purpose of this resolution is to condemn the political violence that occurred in 2025, both in Idaho and across the United States. The resolution reaffirms the fundamental principles of a free and civil society, honors those who serve our shared communities, and emphasizes the importance of open and respectful political discourse without fear of violence or retribution. This resolution calls upon all Idahoans, regardless of their background, party affiliation, or beliefs, to reject political violence, recommit to respectful and constructive debate, and uphold the shared values of civility, unity, and mutual respect as Americans.

LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF IDAHO Sixty-eighth Legislature Second Regular Session - 2026 IN THE SENATE SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 113 BY STATE AFFAIRS COMMITTEE A SENATE RESOLUTION1 STATING FINDINGS OF THE SENATE, CONDEMNING POLITICAL VIOLENCE, HONORING THE2 LIVES, LEADERSHIP, AND LEGACIES OF VICTIMS OF POLITICAL VIOLENCE, AND3 CALLING UPON ALL IDAHOANS, REGARDLESS OF BACKGROUND, PARTY AFFILIA-4 TION, OR CREED, TO REJECT ALL FORMS OF POLITICAL VIOLENCE TODAY AND IN5 THE FUTURE.6 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Idaho:7 WHEREAS, the foundation of a free and civil society is the ability to en-8 gage in open and respectful political discourse without fear of violence or9 retribution; and10 WHEREAS, increased political violence has occurred throughout the11 United States; and12 WHEREAS, the recent murder of political activist and leader Charles13 "Charlie" James Kirk while speaking at a peaceful political event at Utah14 Valley University in Orem, Utah, was unconscionable; and15 WHEREAS, the recent murder of Minnesota State Representative Melissa16 Hortman and her husband Mark Hortman in their home as part of a strategic plan17 to kill elected officials in Minnesota was reprehensible; and18 WHEREAS, our own state is not immune from such acts of violence; and19 WHEREAS, in Idaho, law enforcement, first responders, public and civil20 servants, and elected officials are subjects of targeted attacks by those21 who wish them harm, thus eroding civility and creating a barrier between the22 people and their government.23 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the Senate, assembled24 in the Second Regular Session of the Sixty-eighth Idaho Legislature, that25 the Senate hereby condemns all forms of political violence and commends and26 honors the dedicated law enforcement and emergency personnel for their tire-27 less efforts in finding the suspects responsible and the courts involved for28 bringing swift legal justice.29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Senate honors the life, leadership, and30 legacy of the victims of political violence and calls upon all Idahoans,31 regardless of background, party affiliation, or creed, to reject all forms32 of political violence, to recommit to respectful debate, to uphold American33 values, and to respect and honor one another as fellow Americans today and in34 the future.35
